Morelia is the most populated and extensive city in the state of Michoacán and the twentieth most populous in Mexico, with an area of 78 square kilometers and a population of 797,511 inhabitants according to the Population and Housing Census 2010,l INEGI. It is the most important city in the state from a social, economic, cultural, and political viewpoint.
Morelia has inherited a rich, cultural lifestyle. Its architectural heritage, preserved since Colonial times, led Morelia to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991.
Morelia's main economic activity is in services, primarily financial, real estate, and tourism, followed by construction, manufacturing and lastly, primary sector activities.
As part of its active touristic life, the city hosts important annual cultural events such as international music, organ, film, and gastronomy festivals.
