Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements (IPPA)

To foster foreign investors' confidence in Mexico, the Mexican government guarantees a legal framework to strengthen the protection of FDI and Mexican investment abroad.

The IPPA cover the following disciplines: investment definition, promotion, expropriation, admission, dispute settlement Investor-State and State-State.

Mexico currently has signed 25 agreements of this nature.

In addition, some Free Trade Agreements signed by Mexico include a chapter about investment similar to IPPA. This is the case of United States, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Japan, among others.

Free trade Agreements and IPPAs provide legal certainty to foreign companies that choose to locate operations in Mexico.
