Mexico stands out in the world as an exporter of food products. This industry is comprised of strategic agriculture, forestry, livestock, beekeeping, hunting, fisheries, biotechnology, beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic), snuff, candy, snacks and packaging. Between 2003 and 2007 Mexico's agricultural exports grew at an average annual rate of 12%, while imports have made it to 11%. The country is among the world's leading exporters of tomato, avocado, Persian lime, organic coffee and aloe vera and cucumber and pepper greenhouse.
Mexico ranks as the eighth largest producer of meat worldwide. With regard to exports of processed foods sold in 2007 outside Mexico 351 000 488 000 000 dollars. The main destinations were Japan, USA and Korea. The canned food sector is an industry with steady growth in the area of exports, which now accounts for over 18.4 percent of total sales. The growth rate of exports of this sector in the last 7 years is 18 to 20 percent. Finally, in the last 30 years, tequila and mezcal have achieved a significant international and obtained the appellation of origin.
With its land area, climatic diversity and geographic proximity to one of the largest markets in the world (the U.S.), Mexico has a strategic location in terms of export of food. The value of exports in this sector during 2007 was 3 000 660 million dollars in the category of vegetables, 2 000 095 million dollars in fruit; $ 383 million in coffee, tea and the like, and $ 706 million in fish, crustaceans and the like.
